Meeting the first Mile

In partnership with

Welcome back to Spins weekly dose of travel and movement. I'm pumped you're here because quite honestly? I started this newsletter for people exactly like us – curious about blockchain but tired of feeling like we need a computer science degree just to understand what everyone's talking about.

Take the bite out of rising vet costs with pet insurance

Veterinarians across the country have reported pressure from corporate managers to prioritize profit. This incentivized higher patient turnover, increased testing, and upselling services. Pet insurance could help you offset some of these rising costs, with some providing up to 90% reimbursement.

This Week's Move: Ending the month of May as National Walking Month, finding your walking crew not to mention discovering your neighborhood walking group. This week, I challenge you to find (or create) a local walking group. Check Facebook groups, Meetup apps, or just ask around your neighborhood. A newly added routine on Wednesday mornings are walks or “meeting miles” as I like to call it and is the highlight of my week.

Blockchain Basics: What Actually IS Blockchain? Okay, let's start with the basics without making your brain hurt. Imagine blockchain like a shared Google Doc that everyone can see, but no one can secretly edit. Every time someone adds new information, it gets time-stamped and everyone has to agree it's legit before it gets permanently added.

Think of it like this: You and your walking group decide to track everyone's weekly miles in a shared notebook. Instead of one person controlling the notebook (who might "accidentally" give themselves extra credit), everyone has an identical copy. When someone logs their miles, everyone's copy gets updated automatically, and everyone can see the history. That's blockchain – just digital, and way more sophisticated.

The cool part? No single person or company controls it. It's like having a referee that everyone trusts, but the referee is actually just a really smart system that everyone agreed to use.

Community Spotlight Since this is our first week back, I'm sharing my own story. A couple years ago, I challenged myself to start talking about blockchain in simple terms. Fast forward to today, and this newsletter gives more relevance to my walking content among other things! To keep time with staying healthy and reading, I started to habit stack, listening to audiobooks, podcasts, learning while walking. Something about moving my body helped my brain process all this new information.

This Week's Challenge: Step & Learn

Find a local walking group OR recruit a friend/family member for weekly walks. Download a podcast app and queue up one beginner-friendly blockchain podcast episode. Walk for 20 minutes while listening (or just thinking about what you learned here)

Bonus points: Share what you learned with your walking buddy.

Resources Corner:

App Rec: Meetup (for finding local walking groups)

Podcast Rec: "Blockchain Basics" by CoinDesk (start with episode 1)

Simple Explanation: Think of blockchain like a shared, tamper-proof diary that everyone can read but no one can change once it's written.

Till next week, thought to marinate on – every expert was once a beginner who refused to give up!

Keep moving,

Mel

P.S. Hit reply and tell me about your first walk this week. I read every email!
